Raw material production improves
There is somewhat of a negative trend appearing in Pakistan’s leather industry at present. While reports continue to show a decline in the exports of finished leather goods, the latest figures released by Pakistan's Ministry, Food, Ariculture & Livestock, show that the availability of raw materials in the country is improving.
According to the statistics Pakistan produced 54.3 million hides and skins in the last fiscal year (July-June), 2% more than the 53.25 million pieces produced in the prior year, however, the industry appears unable to use this increased availability to its advantage in order to increase it value-added exports as finished goods exports continue to fall.
Overall, during the period, 9.1 million hides and 45.2 million skins were generated, compared with 8.6 million hides and 44.65 million skins in the prior year.
