BASF opens new leather service centre
BASF India Limited has opened the first stage of a new technical centre for the leather industry in Thane near Mumbai, India, including a fully-equipped pilot tannery.
The company decided to site the centre in India as it was considered a good location from which to serve major suppliers of the leather and garment industry throughout South Asia. Furthermore as India is one of the most important growth markets for BASF’s leather business in Asia it is believed that the new technical centre will help the company to enhance its position in the country.
Commenting on the new complex, which is set to be completed at the beginning of 2008, Prasad Chandran, chairman of BASF India and the head of the company in South Asia, said, “The aim of this investment is to fulfil the growing demands of the market and to respond to the growth of the leather sector in India. This new technical centre will enable us to bring the global competence of BASF right to our customers’ doorstep and will help us to face the challenges of the future together with them.”
