Illegal trade in hides hampers development
According to local media reports Cameroon’s leather industry is being hampered and is unable to develop due to a lack of support from the government and the large quantities of hides being smuggled to the neighbouring countries of Nigeria and Chad.
Those in the industry claim that up to CFA2 billion ($4.473 million) worth of hides are leaving the country illegally each year, resulting in shortages of raw materials at domestic tanneries and leading to a fall in employment in the sector, which has reportedly dropped from some 1,200 jobs a decade ago to just 200 now.
