Waste management deal agreed
In an attempt to address mounting pollution, the City District government of Karachi (CDGK) in Pakistan has signed a letter of intent for a new 20-year waste management deal with Shanghai Shun Gong Environmental Protection Limited under which the latter will collect solid waste, including that produced by the leather industry, and transport it to landfill for $20 a ton.
Announcing the new deal, Mustafa Kamal from the Karachi City government said that more technology was required to deal with the 10,000 tons of waste produced in the city daily, and as a result of the new agreement — which should come into effect in January — the people of Karachi would begin to see a change in the city’s environment.
