Leather leads decline in manufacturing
23/11/2007
Despite reports last week (see www.leatherbiz.com on November 15) that leather manufacturing remains stable, according to the latest Linked Employer-Employee Data (LEED) series produced by Statistics New Zealand, property and business services have replaced manufacturing as the biggest employer in the country for the first time ever due to a decline in certain sectors, including leather.
The property and business services industry had 238,200 filled jobs during the September 2006 year, whilst manufacturing industries had the second largest number of filled jobs (237,000). The report cited the leather, footwear, textiles, and clothing manufacturing sub-industry as the key drivers of the decline in manufacturing industries.
The number of total filled jobs across all industries was 1,751,450 in the September 2006 year, 1.7% higher than in the previous year and 17.4% better than in the five years prior to September 2006.
