Independência expands

News from Brazil is doing little to back up fears of a decline in beef consumption as one of the country’s largest slaughterhouses and meat packers Frigorífico Independência has now announced that it has taken out five-year leases on three meat packing units in the state of Mato Grosso at a cost of 30 million reais (approximately $16 million).

The units, which will all comply with current export requirements, are located in the towns of Juína, Confresa, and Pontes and Lacerda and will have an overall  slaughter capacity of 2,400 head per day by March next year, taking Independência’s daily slaughter capacity to 8,500 head.

Commenting on the expansion president Roberto Graziano Russo said, "This transaction completes our production base in Brazil and fills in a blank in our geographical presence. It places us in a leading position in one of the most important Brazilian cattle breeding states. The strategic location of these factories in the state of Mato Grosso gives us access to a large cattle supply within reasonable distance."
