Following on from Lanxess and Rohm and Haas’ expansion into central Europe, meat processors also appear to now be acknowledging the potential that lies in the region.

American meat processor Smithfield Foods Inc. has appointed one of the company’s vice-presidents, Robert Manly, to manage international operations in Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom, as well as oversee the company's Groupe Smithfield joint venture in Europe, joint ventures in Mexico and China and an interest in Campofrío in Spain.
Commenting on the appointment, president C. Larry Pope said, "Bo Manly has more than 30 years of experience in our industry and his expertise and leadership should help maximise the performance of our international operations."

Smithfield’s international sales, excluding joint ventures, are about $1 billion.
