Southern tanneries receive regional funds

12/11/2007

Thirteen tanneries in the Solofra district of southern Italy have received financial aid from the Calabrian regional authorities.

The total funding the regional government has made available to the leather industry is around €150,000; the companies involved have agreed to invest the money in restructuring their businesses and in bringing their production processes up to date.

The leather industry is still of great economic importance in the local area but has suffered a considerable downturn over the past five years. Nevertheless, results across the Solfora tanning sector for the first half of 2007 were 19.6% higher than for the corresponding period last year as local producers focus more than ever before on the export market.
