According to local media reports, one of the owners of a major Indian footwear and accessories manufacturer, Kolkata-based Sreeleathers, was shot dead near his home in Saket Bazaar, Jamshedpur, on November 2.

According to police Ashish Dey was in his car travelling to one of the company’s showrooms when three assailants on motorbikes opened fire at point blank range. He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The family said that he had received threatening calls demanding money prior to the incident on Friday, but had been denied police protection.

In protest at the shooting, many local businesses and retail outlets, supported by local political parties, closed for the day.

Sreeleathers operates 30 retail outlets across India and recently established a joint venture with Greek footwear distributor Costa Ginnes, with the aim of expanding into Europe.
