New Italian trade commissioner appointed

31/10/2007

Massimiliano Sponzilli has been appointed as the new Italian Trade Commissioner for Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore. Replacing Marina Damaggio, he now oversees trade with three of Italy’s important trade partners.

Italian companies are already well-established in all of these countries although this has not been without certain complications and Mr Sponzilli will have much work to do in areas such as intellectual property protection.

As reported by www.leatherbiz.com at the end of July, having set up a tannery in Indonesia in 2005, Arzignano-based tanning group Mastrotto—which specialises in leather for upholstery and furniture—was unable to trade under its own name in the country due to a local company having already taken out a patent on the name.
