Political attack in Pakistan disrupts leather industry
The leather industry in Karachi has been severely disrupted as a result of the recent suicide attack on the Benazir Bhutto’s convoy at the end of last week as it passed through the city on her arrival back in Pakistan after years of self-imposed exile.
According to local sources the attack, which tragically killed more than 130 people and wounded a further 500, has led to severe disruptions in the processing of hides and skins, the production of leather goods and the export of such goods, not only as a direct result of the chaos ensuing the bomb blast but also during the three days of national mourning that followed. The situation in the industry has been further exacerbated as it follows the four-day Eid-ul-Fitar holiday.
