Demand from South American neighbours boosts Peruvian exports
According to the Peruvian Commission for Export and Tourism Promotion (Promperu), the country’s leather and textile footwear exports improved 21.9% in the first seven months of 2007 (January to July) to reach US$7.44 million, boosted largely by increased demand from other South American countries.
Chile alone consumed a massive 56.96% of the country’s total footwear exports whilst Colombia accounted for 24.33% and Ecuador imported 15.22% of the total export volume. The remainder was sold to the USA, Venezuela, the UK, Spain, Bolivia, Mexico and France.
At present the Peruvian footwear manufacturing market is dominated by six large companies — Calzado Atlas, Segurindustria, Wellco Peruana, Industria de Calzado, Fábrica de Calzado Líder and Juan Leng Delgado (Calimod) — which exported an incredible 64% of the total volume.
