Retailer withdraws leather furniture after customers complain of burning

Retail group Argos, which has 680 stores throughout the UK and Ireland specialising in goods for the home, has withdrawn a line of leather furniture customers complained of suffering burning and sores after coming into contact with it.

The firm said the "very small" number of incidents may be linked to the leather covering on some of the items. The furniture had been made with leather from a specific but unnamed tannery over a nine-week period, Argos said. It accepted that an allergic reaction from some customers was a possibility.

The retailer said it would carry out an investigation with its suppliers and that it had withdrawn the items in the meantime. It also said it would try to make contact with all customers who had bought the affected items.

"The health and safety of our customers is our top priority and we have been working closely with a range of experts who have been advising us on the appropriate course of action," the company told the BBC.
