Avian flu confirmed at Canadian farm

27/09/2007

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has quarantined a farm in Saskatchewan, Canada, having confirmed the presence of avian influenza.

The H7N3 strain has been detected in poultry at the farm, bit the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has reassured people that the poultry industry is “safe and free from H5N1”, the strain most associated with human disease.

All birds at the site will be culled and disposed of, followed by a disinfection of the premises.

The CFIA will apply restrictions on the movement of poultry and poultry products within three kilometres of the infected premises. Any poultry operations within ten kilometres of the infected premises will be closely and regularly monitored for signs of illness.
