A third case of Bluetongue has been diagnosed at a second Suffolk premises near Lowestoft, approximately 40 miles from the unit where the first two cases were discovered.

However, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, (Defra), the spread cannot be declared an outbreak at this juncture.

Animals across Suffolk, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire are now be monitored for signs of the disease, which is transmitted to various farm animals via midges.

On a positive note, a suspected foot-and-mouth case at a Hampshire farm was shown to be unfounded. Defra says the risk of the disease spreading across the country is now considered low and the temporary control zone around the site has been lifted.
