Chinese leather exports up across almost all sectors

Chinese leather exports increased by 33.5% between January and July, according to the China Leather Industry Association. Exports for the period totalled $14.3 billion compared with $10.7 billion in the corresponding period last year.

There were increases in leather shoes exports, which were worth $5.5 billion in the seven-month period compared with $4.1 billion in 2006, as well as leather travel goods, which were $6 billion versus $4.1 billion and leather glove exports, which totalled $ 473.1 million, up from $361.8 million.

Leather balls exports were also up, totalling $159.6 million compared with $140.8 million, as were raw hides, which were worth $1.4 million compared with $1.3 million.

The largest growth was seen in footwear component exports, which were worth $602.6 million, up from $359 million and leather equipment exports, which were worth $31.7 million compared with $17 million.

However, leather garment exports fell to $625.8 million from $655.1 million and fur garment exports to $114 million from $197.9 million. Finished leather fetched just $803 million compared with $863.4 million.

China imported leather and leather goods worth $4.1 billion during the seven-month period, up 33.7% from $3.1 billion in same period last year.
