Positive mood in Ethiopian leather sector

A 10.2% increase in total exports was registered by the National Bank of Ethiopia in the second quarter compared with the first quarter, and exports were up 5.1% compared with the second quarter of 2006. Exports totalled $220.7 million and all sectors barring coffee and chat reported increases.

Leather and leather goods showed particularly high growth compared with the first quarter. Exports from the segment were up 13% in volume and 20% in value, leading to a 35% increase overall. Leather exports accounted for a 10% share of the total export market during the quarter.
