Pakistani leather exporters struggle in August

Despite new government initiatives for the leather and footwear industries, Pakistani leather exports fell 3% in August to $79.475 million compared with $81.8 million in July. Exports dropped 9.5% from $90.4 million in August 2006, according to Pakistan’s Federal Bureau of Statistics.

Finished leather exports totalled $28.4 million compared with $26.5 million (+7%), while leather goods were worth $43.3 million compared with $42.4 million (+2%). However, leather footwear was worth $10.2 million versus $10.5 million (-3.5%).

For July and August, leather exports dropped from $185.4 million in the prior-year period to $161.291 million. It exported 2.9 million m² of finished leather worth $54.9 million in the two-month period compared with 3 million m² worth $51 million in the 2006 period. However, although volume fell 3.7%, value rose 7.7%.

Leather goods exported in the two-month period totalled $85.7 million – comprising leather garments worth $68.5 million, leather gloves worth $12.3 million and other leather goods worth $4.8 million – falling 23.9% compared with $112.5 million in the corresponding period last year.
