Vietnam’s leather goods exports up 25%

The Vietnamese General Statistics Office has revealed that total exports for January to July period were worth $26.8 billion compared with $22.3 billion in the corresponding period in 2006.

Overall exports for the leather sector stood at $2.7 billion for the seven-month period compared with $2.4 billion in the prior-year period. Leather goods exports – including handbags, wallets and luggage – were up 24.6% from $301 million between January and July 2006 to $375 million for the 2007 period. Leather goods exports for July showed substantial growth, totalling $65 million
compared with $50 million in July 2006.

Leather footwear exports rose 13.4% to $2.4 billion during the seven-month period, from $2.1 billion in the prior-year period. Figures for July indicate a huge increase in footwear exports, which rose from $340 million in July 2006 to $410 million.
