South Africa’s Labour Minister, Membathisi Mdladlana, is planning to visit the country’s Sheltered Employment Factories (SEF) on September 25. The factories were set up 60 years ago to provide employment for people with disabilities.

Approximately 1,000 people are employed by its 12 SEFs, which manufacture leather goods, furniture and textiles, among other items.

Reports indicate that 10-15% of South Africa’s 2.5 million disabled citizens require sheltered employment and it is working towards introducing a new management framework for units to improve efficiency.
