The incoming president of the the International Union of Leather Technicians and Chemists Societies (IULTCS), Elton Hurlow, has said that attempting to encourage players throughout the global leather sector to mend the fragmented state of the industry would be his main priority.
Speaking at the International Leather Forum in Paris on 17 September, Mr Hurlow, who is the marketing director for leather at Buckman Laboratories, said that he felt the leather industry was dominated by powerful hides and skin traders at one end, and powerful retailers and brands at the other.
“In between, you just have too many companies, beating each other up the whole time to get to the scraps, fighting over price, racing each other to the bottom on margin,” he said. “That cannot continue.”
