Total exports from India’s micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) showed steady growth in the 2006-07 period, backing up a statement made by Minister of small scale industries and agro and rural industries, Shri Mahabir Prasad, last November.

In his address, Mr Prasad encouraged growth among the country’s smaller firms as a way of increasing both profit and employment. India comprises 12.5 million MSMEs, through which 30 million people are currently employed.

Exports are said to have totalled $50 billion in the 2006-07 period, accounting for an incredible 40% of the country's overall exports. Among the major contributing sectors were leather goods, ready-to-wear apparel and chemicals.
