Good alligator season ahead
10/09/2007
The authorities in Louisiana say they expect this season's alligator harvest to be a strong one.
The month-long licenced hunting and trapping season began last week and the state's wildlife and fisheries department immediately said it was clear conditions had returned to normal this year after drought in 2006 and devastating storms in 2005. The department said it anticipated a total harvest figure of 34,000 or 35,000 alligators.
The meat of the creatures is a popular local delicacy, but hide traders ship most Louisiana alligator skins to tanneries in Europe, especially in France and Italy. Demand for alligator leather is high for handbags and other accessories.
