Leather exports from Brazil for the month of August 2007 leapt to 33,400 tonnes, a rise of 18.5% on the previous month, when the country shipped 27,000 tonnes.

The figures mean that, last month, Brazilian tanners were sending on average 1,500 tonnes of leather a day to overseas clients.

This means income from leather exports for August is likely to reach $188.4 million, with average prices passing $5,600 a tonne.

The main importers of Brazilian leather for the period were traders and user organisations in Italy, China, Hong Kong and the United States.
