The Argentinian authorities put on public display for the first time today three mummified Inca children, discovered in 1999 after 500 years at the top of the Llullaillaco volcano, almost 7,000 metres up into the Andes.

One of them, the only boy and, therefore, known as 'El Niño', was wearing a beautifully preserved pair of leather mocassins with brown wool for lining and animal skin ankle-protectors.

The remains of the children will go on display in special glass cases, constructed to replicate the conditions at the top of the mountain.
