Schmél launches UNIDO project in Paraguay

04/09/2007

UNIDO representative Ferenc Schmél has arrived in Paraguay at the start of a fact-finding mission aimed at helping the country boost its leather industry.

The Paraguayan government has identified leather as one of three sectors (the others are chemicals and oil) in which it can achieve fast growth while creating substantial numbers of jobs. UNIDO is supporting the initiative by offering expert advice for a three-year period.

During this initial visit, Dr Schmél will hold discussions with government representatives as well as with trade unions and business leaders. He will visit several tanneries.

He told local media on his arrival in Asunción that his immediate intention was to gather as much information as he could on the way the leather sector works in Paraguay at the moment. This, he said, would allow UNIDO to work out where its support can make the greatest impact in helping Paraguayan tanners become more competitive.
