Ethiopia hopes to expand leather exports

The Ethiopian minister for trade, Tadesse Haile, has called on the government to help tanneries in the country improve so that finished leather exports can increase.
Ethiopia is renowned for the high quality of its sheep and goat leather, which is particularly suited to glove-making, but only commands a 1% share of the luxury leathergoods market at the moment. To help boost this figure, the government plans to introduce an export tariff on semi-finished leather next year. It hopes this will encourage the country's 24 tanneries to add more value on home soil.
UK-based Pittards has been working in Ethiopia for more than 70 years and currently manages the country's largest tannery, which is owned by the government. The company has said it will now try to encourage its glove manufacturing customers to set up operations beside it in the African country.
