BASF leather chemicals business unit to move to Singapore
03/09/2007
BASF has confirmed to leatherbiz.com that it will make Singapore the global headquarters for its leather chemicals business unit.
The story appeared over the weekend in the Financial Times Deutschland, with many newswires inaccurately reporting afterwards that the company was planning to outsource its leather chemicals activities.
"This is not the case," a company spokesperson told us today. "It's not that big a story; it was announced internally in July. The head of the business unit will be Reinhard Leppkes, who will move to Singapore from corporate headquarters in Ludwigshafen, Germany, but no other jobs here will be affected."
He added that BASF believed the move would prove popular with its big leather customers.
"We're focusing on Asia because that's where the big customers are," he said. "The big movers and shakers are in Asia. If we are closer to them, we'll be able to respond better to their needs."
