30/08/2007
The chief of staff of the Bangladeshi army, General Moeen U Ahmed, travelled north from the capital, Dhaka, to the town of Gazipur today to open a new leather facility that will specialise in supplying the armed forces and the police force with boots and belts.
The new factory, owned by Bangladesh Footwear and Leather Products Limited, a joint-venture, between Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory Limited and Hong Kong-based Trade Mutual, will also produce footwear for the civilian population.
The new enterprise has committed to using 95% local raw materials.
General Moeen said a locally controlled producer would help the Bangladeshi armed forces keep costs down.
