China and Argentina meet to resolve tariff dispute
29/08/2007
Argentinian officials were to sit down with their Chinese counterparts in Buenos Aires today in an attempt to resolve the trade dispute that has grown up between the two countries.
Argentina announced earlier in the month that it would impose tariffs on leather imports from Asia, with many commentators singling China out as the main focus of concern.
China threatened to complain to the World Trade Organisation over the measures, which it insisted went against the Geneva-based body's rules for international commerce.
The delegations were headed by Argentina's secretary for international economic relations, Alfredo Chiaradía, and by China's ambassador to the South American country, Shang Tuo.
Diplomatic sources said that finding a solution to the conflict was the clear objective of the lunchtime gathering.
