Iraqi leather factory accused of faking 'Made In China' labels

With US retailers resisting official attempts to persuade them to stock Iraqi-made products, the US official overseeing efforts to promote Iraqi businesses, Paul Brinkley, has claimed that it is difficult to persuade even Iraqi consumers to buy the goods.

Mr Brinkley, the US
deputy undersecretary of defence, has told the Washington Post that he has come across a leather factory in Iraq that is stamping 'Made In China' on soccer balls it has manufactured to convince people in Iraq to buy them.

He explained that, because the people of Iraq were, for many years, only able to buy local goods, the appetite for imports is high.
