Capital investment in leather

The regional authorities in Fez are working on a programme to boost the industrial output of the Moroccan capital. In the north African country, both Casablanca and Tangiers have a larger industrial footprint.

So far, leather, textiles and food production are the three areas to have benefited, with more projects to follow.

Regional governor, Mohammed Gharrabi, has said the programme of regional industrial development will continue, highlighting Fez’s advantages, such as good infrastructure and availability of labour. “It’s absolutely feasible that, for certain sectors, Fez could become in future a true regional hub for multinational companies,” he added.

Specific to the leather industry, the programme has introduced customs-free zones that the authorities believe will help encourage tanneries and leathergoods manufacturers to set up in the region. Incentives are also available.
