Last reminder of tannery goes as tower tumbles

22/08/2007

The authorities in the state of Michigan have demolished the tower of the former Whitehall Leather Company’s tannery, which closed several years ago.

The brick structure was the water tower for the tannery and was the last remaining part of the site, which will now be redeveloped into residential property.

The tannery operated for more than a century.

Some residents, including former tannery employees, have complained that the developers should have built round the tower and kept it as a testament to the impact on the community of the leather industry.
