Tannery ordered to close

21/08/2007

The state government of Uttar Pradesh in northern India has ordered a tannery to close because of alleged shortcomings in its waste management strategy.

The state Pollution Control Board asked the Mizra International tannery near Kanpur for comments on waste management at the end of July. Claiming that the company's response was "unsatisfactory", it issued a closure notice at the start of this week. It first investigated hazardous waste at the tannery in May 2006.

A Pollution Control Board official told The Times of India that the organisation was satisfied there was a real risk of pollution from the Mizra facility.
