Upholstery dominates

In the last few years, Brazilian leather has increasingly gone into furniture and automotive upholstery. According to the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB), 60% of the 45 million hides produced in the country go to the upholstery sector now, followed by 25% absorbed by the footwear industry and 15% used in the production of leathergoods and garments.

Several tanneries process large hides which are ideal for the production of upholstery leather. Companies such as Bertin, Braspelco, Fuga Couros, Atlântica and Vitapelli are investing in new technology and quality assurance to make sure their leather complies with specific international standards.

Vitapelli, whose competitive advantage is its high productivity of standardised leather, devotes 74% of its production of crust leather to the upholstery sector.
