Japanese leather company, Atlântica do Brasil, has inaugurated its third Brazilian unit in the city of Uberaba, in the state of Minas Gerais. The other two tanneries are located in the state of São Paulo.

The president of the Atlântica Group, Mutoko Matsumura, attended the inauguration ceremony. The premises, which used to belong to an old tannery, have been fully refurbished and adapted.

The Uberaba tannery will produce crust leather for automotive upholstery, safety shoe upper leather, furniture upholstery leather and cut and sewn car seat upholstery parts. The group also manufactures leather for leathergoods and dog toys, and waterproof leather for army boots. Almost the whole production is exported to Europe, Asia and the US. Sales are as follows: leather, 48%, (13% to Europe and 35% to Asia); upper leather, 26% (13% Europe and 13% Asia); and automotive upholstery leather, 26% (20% US and 6% Brasil)

The new tannery's turnover in the first year of operations is expected to reach US$ 10 million. Initially, 500 direct and 250 indirect jobs are to be created.

The Atlântica Group is planning to invite representatives of vehicle makers such as Honda, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Subaru, Nissan, Suzuki and Ford to visit the new tannery in the near future.
