Jobs go at Tasmanian tannery

17/08/2007

Twenty-five workers at one of Australia’s oldest tanneries have lost their jobs.

Union representatives said they had been expecting the news since the start of the year when the tannery, Cuthbertson’s in South Hobart, Tasmania, lost a contract to supply leather to local footwear manufacturer, Blundstone.

Cuthbertson’s had been dependent on Blundstone for around two-thirds of its turnover, but in February the footwear manufacturer decided to buy leather from overseas suppliers instead.

The tannery set up in Tasmania in 1841.
