Tariffs to come on leather imports
17/08/2007
The Argentinian government has announced a new customs policy, outlining a series of measures to restrict imports of leathergoods and a group of other products.
Finance minister, Miguel Peirano, has been hinting at taking this step for several weeks. On announcing the new policy today, he said the idea was to avoid “disloyalty” among Argentinian consumers.
He added: “I want to manage our external trade in a way that allows us to balance up investment, employment and stability.”
The areas he is seeking to protect, including the leather industry, are all parts of the economy that involve a high level of manual labour and are, therefore, important for boosting employment.
The country will now come up with tariff levels on imports of the goods concerned.
