Rio Grande do Sul leather exports drop

16/08/2007

According to information provided by the Brazilian Department of Foreign Trade (SECEX), in the first seven months of the current year, Rio Grande do Sul tanners exported 3.8 million hides, which shows an 8% drop compared to the 4.1 million hides exported in the same period last year.

Of these, 439,000 were wet-blue and 1.4 million were crust. Two million hides were exported as finished leather, ready to be used in the production of footwear, garments, leathergoods, and furniture and automotive upholstery.

Revenue increased 12% from $ 40.8 million in 2006 to $ 42.5 million.

China is still the main buyer of leather from Rio Grande do Sul and accounts for 26.6% of the export revenue of local tanneries. A new situation is that the US has overtaken Italy to occupy second position. The US buys mainly finished leather while, traditionally, Italy imports mainly wet-blue hides.

Rio Grande do Sul is Brazil's second largest leather exporting state with exports representing 24.4% of the country’s total leather exports of $1.28 billion. São Paulo leads leather exports at 35.1%. Paraná is third with 6.5%, and Mato Grosso do Sul is fourth with 6.3%.
