Packaging revolution for furniture

Montreal-based upholstery manufacturer Greatex Mills has developed a leather-scented paper product, which it intends to use to put a ‘new leather’ smell into furniture packaging.

Greatex said the product was designed to enhance the company’s Oekopelle leather-fabric hybrid product, which it calls “leather on a roll.”

Company president, Sheldon Lewis, said paper manufacturer Cascades had given his firm worldwide exclusivity for the furniture industry for the scented paper.

“It is really something new and special,” he said. “I envision that in three years, everyone who sells leather furniture will use this product inside their packaging.”

He said the product has already gained approval from a big client, who had received a complaint from a consumer who opened his furniture and found it didn’t smell like leather. The company tested the same furniture, including the scented paper inside the plastic packaging, and found that on opening, the leather smell was present.

“Our customer was sold on the product after that,” Mr Lewis said.

The as-yet unnamed product will debut at the Decosit fabric show September 8-11 in Brussels.
