Southern comfort for Solofra

The commune of Solofra in southern Italy has issued a reminder that the Italian leather and tanning industry is not restricted to Santa Croce in Tuscany and Arzignano in the Veneto region.

On the recommendation of UNIC, that national tanning industry association, Solofra may hold off the challenge of its northern rivals and become the seat of a new Italian tanning university.

The small town in the province of Avellino still has around 200 tanneries and leather workshops and believes it could provide enough expertise to allow the university to fulfil its main aims of helping the Italian tanning sector improve in marketing, and in developing a new generation of leather professionals.

At the same time, a recent UNIC report brought good news for the whole sector. It said the Italian tanning industry had reduced toxic waste by 90%, and had registered no deaths by industrial accident during the last 12 months.
