Leather and allied industries exceed $6 billion in 2006 revenues

According to a report available from Dublin-based research company Research and Markets, entitled ‘Leather and Allied Product Manufacturing Industries in the US and its Foreign Trade (1997-2009)’, these industries achieved revenues of over $6 billion in the US for 2006.

According to the report, there were 1,357 US establishments in the industry for the year and gross profit totalled $1.5 billion. The average revenue contribution for each establishment was $4.5 million.

The total import export value for 2006 was $33.4 billion and 202 countries conducted foreign trade with the US, flat with 2005. The top trading countries were: China at $20.5 billion (61.3%); Mexico at $2.6 billion (7.9%); Italy at $2.1 billion (6.3%); Vietnam at $1.2 billion (3.6%); and Brazil at $1. billion (3.3%).

Total imports were up 7.2% to $28.5 billion and merchandise was imported from 162 countries. Total exports were also up 7.2% to $3.3 billion, with 181 countries importing US goods.
