Mastrotto confirms Indonesia ban

01/08/2007
The news item reported by Leatherbiz concerning the law prohibiting Mastrotto from selling its own products under the Mastrotto brand name in Indonesia has been confirmed by Ermanno Remigi. Mr Remigi is a member of the management team that has been heading up efforts to establish the Mastrotto Group in the country.

The Arzignano-based tanning group set up a tannery in Indonesia in 2005, but quickly ran into an intellectual property dispute.
Local media in Jakarta reported at the end of July that the Indonesian authorities had told Mastrotto—which specialises in leather for upholstery and furniture—that it may not trade in the country under its own name. A local company took out a patent on the name before the Italian firm could do so itself.
The Jakarta Post quoted the head of the Indonesian Footwear Association, Eddy Widjanarko as saying: “This sort of thing happens here.” The newspaper also spoke to an official who insisted the Indonesian government knew about the particular situation involving Mastrotto and was confident of finding a solution.

Ermanno Remigi later told Leatherbiz: "This story is clear and correct."
