Shoe leather production up in Pakistan

According to Pakistan’s Federal Bureau of Statistics, the country produced 17.2 million m² of shoe upper leather between July 2006 and May 2007 compared with 15.8 million m² in the corresponding period last year, an increase of 9.3%.

In May 2007 alone, shoe upper leather production totalled 1.6 million m² compared with 1.4 million m² in May 2006, a 20.3% increase.

118 tons of sole leather was produced in the July to May period compared with 116 in the 2005/06 period, an increase of 1.7%. However, production in May fell 33.3% to eight tons from 12 tons in May 2006.

Footwear production was up 15.4% to 22.1 million pairs compared with 19,148,000 pairs in the prior 11-month period. For May, footwear production increased 33.4% to 2.6 million pairs compared with 1.9 million pairs in May 2006.
