Pakistan leather industry falls short of its potential

26/07/2007

According to members of the leather sector in Pakistan, there is a need for a serious shake-up if the sector is to reach its potential. Representatives are calling for schemes similar to those introduced in India, such as subsidies and financial help for training.

Reports indicate that the country is lacking in trained workers and is struggling to obtain sufficient supplies of raw materials, with slaughter numbers on the decline.

Another major issue is that exports of value-added products are not selling at high enough prices and that a great deal of production has now been moved to other Asian countries. Without being able to offer the larger brand names, the country is struggling to attract buyers, particularly in terms of leather footwear. Meanwhile, well-know companies are reluctant to open factories in Pakistan due to high costs and staffing deficiencies.
