China bans US meat products

16/07/2007

China has imposed a ban on meat products from seven US companies as a result of “sub-standard” goods.

The move follows a ban imposed on Chinese farm-raised fish, shrimp and eel, by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in late June, which was viewed as unacceptable by Chinese authorities.

The US companies involved include the world’s largest meat processor Tyson Foods, Inc. as well as Sanderson Farms Inc, Intervision Foods, AJC International Inc, Cargill Meat Solutions Corp, Van Luin Foods USA Inc., which were found to contain excessive amounts of selenium, which is said to cause gastrointestinal problems, hair loss, neurological damage, and cirrhosis of the liver.
