Pakistan’s leather exports slip

According to Pakistan’s Federal Bureau of Statistics, the country's total leather exports fell 2.7% to $72.9 million in May compared with $74.9 million in April. Compared with May 2006, leather exports dropped 27.3% from $100.3 million as finished leather exports declined 2.9% to $24 million from $24.7 million and leather goods fell 5.6% to $38.2 million from $40.5 million. However, on a more positive note, footwear exports rose 10.1% to $10.7 million from $9.7 million.

For the first eleven months of the financial year (July 2006 to May 2007), total leather exports were down 17.9% to $867 million from $1.1 billion in the same period last year. Although finished leather exports grew 1.71% in terms of volume to 15.9 million m² from 15.6 million m² and rose 1.9% in value to $268.1 million from $263 million in the prior-year period, leather goods exports declined 25.4% to $493.8 million from $661.6 million. This included leather garments worth $349.5 million, leather gloves worth $111.8 million and other leather goods worth $32.5 million.

Footwear exports fell 19.7% during the eleven-month period, to13.9 million pairs worth $105.101 million compared with 19.7 million pairs worth $130.9 million in the prior-year period.
