Indian leather exports up 9.5%

Indian leather exports for the ten-month period from April 2006 to January 2007 totalled $2.5 billion compared with $2.2 billion in the prior-year period, a 9.5% increase in dollar terms. In terms of rupees, exports were Rs111.8 billion versus Rs99.4 billion, a 12.5% increase.

The breakdown reveals that finished leather exports in the ten-month period rose 7.9% to $567.4 million from $525.7 million, while leather footwear exports increased 20.5% to $755.35 million from $626.48 million and footwear component exports rose 22.9% to $181.28 million from $147.48 million. Leather goods exports increased 4.9% to $573.14 million from $546.56 million, while saddlery and harness goods grew 6% to $66 million from $62.27.

However, leather garment exports fell 8.5% to $269.16 million compared with $294.18 million in the corresponding period last year.

Imports were also up during the ten months with raw hides, skins and finished leather imports up 20.8% to $296.43 million from $245.3 million.
