New Calcutta leather facility planned

India’s Ministry of Commerce has agreed to provide funding towards a new leather design development institute at the Bantala Calcutta Leather Complex (CLC), which is set to cost in the region of Rs100 million ($2.5 million).

Commerce Minister Jairam Ramesh said he was happy with the progress being made in relocating a number of tanneries to the complex, which is reportedly the largest project of its kind in Asia.

The government hopes to raise footwear production—which accounted for one-third of total leather exports in fiscal 2006/2007—to 60% of the country’s total leather exports by 2011.
