New Indian leather parks in the pipeline

The Indian Ministry of Commerce has announced plans to develop new Small
Integrated Leather Parks (SILP) in a move aimed to assist the sector in achieving a target of $7 billion in leather exports by 2011.

According to Minister of State for Commerce, Jairam Ramesh, the parks, which are being planned in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, will each involve an investment of Rs1 billion ($25 million) spread over the next five years, which will be incorporated into the 11th Plan leather sector programme.

According to the minister, the scheme could create 500,000 direct jobs in the next five years, including employment for female staff.
